Gen Z and Millennial Workers Eye Leadership Roles, Prioritize Flexibility, New Study Finds
A recent survey by global real estate advisor CBRE reveals that the majority of Gen Z and Millennial workers in the UK are eager to climb the corporate ladder, with 74% aspiring to become business department leaders and 62% aiming for C-Suite positions. The research, which gathered insights from over 750 young professionals, highlights a strong desire among these generations to advance their careers and reap the financial rewards of leadership roles.
Interestingly, the study also challenges the notion that younger workers frequently job-hop. A significant portion of respondents expressed a willingness to stay long-term with a single employer, reflecting a commitment to stability and career growth within one organization.
However, the data shows a gender gap in leadership aspirations. Men are more likely than women to seek senior roles, with 30% of women stating they are not interested in the pressures of high-level positions. This disparity raises concerns about the future diversity of leadership teams, which Georgina Fraser, Head of Human Capital Consulting at CBRE UK, emphasizes is crucial for attracting top talent.
Flexibility emerged as the most valued workplace feature, with 38% of respondents naming it as their top priority, underscoring the importance of adaptable work environments for future leaders. While Millennials prioritized wellbeing, Gen Z placed greater emphasis on strong leadership within their top workplace features.
Despite the focus on flexibility, 79% of respondents still appreciate having access to an office space outside of their home, highlighting the enduring importance of team collaboration, location, and dedicated workspaces in today’s hybrid work culture.
