Oppenheimer Dominates the Golden Globe Awards

Oppenheimer showed up and showed off at the Golden Globe Awards 2024. The epic thriller, a fan favorite, was a shoo-in for all the awards it was nominated for, being a massive critical and commercial success. It didn’t disappoint, winning five major awards on a night filled with smiles for everyone involved.

How Oppenheimer Fared

The 81st Golden Globe Awards was held on January 7, 2024, at Beverly Hills, California, in the United States, with multiple film executives and enthusiasts in attendance. Oppenheimer went into the awards show off the back of almost grossing $1 billion at the box office. The biographical film was deservedly nominated eight times, one fewer than the much-heralded Barbie and Succession. It ended up being the biggest winner of the night with five awards.

Oppenheimer won awards across different categories – acting, directing, picture, and best score. Cillian Murphy, who played the titular character, won for “Actor in a Drama Motion Picture,” Christopher Nolan won for “Director of a Motion Picture,” and Robert Downey Jr. won for “Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.” The movie won two categories on its own, “Original Score” made by Ludwig Goransson, and the “Drama Motion Picture.

A Successful Box-Office Bomb

Oppenheimer’s two biggest winners, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., were effusive in their praise of the director and movie, respectively. Murphy spoke highly of Christopher Nolan’s “rigor, focus and dedication” in making the movie, which grossed $954m at the box office. He said,
“I knew the first time I walked on Christopher Nolan’s set that it was different, that I was in the hands of a visionary director.”

The two have been working together for almost two decades, since 2005, with Oppenheimer being Murphy’s first leading role, as the rest were lesser. The sixth time was the charm, as it brought them tremendous success. It was the first Golden Globe award for the Irish actor who played the “Tommy Shelby” character in the legendary British series Peaky Blinders. Likewise for Nolan, who won his first Golden Globe award after being nominated five times in the past.

Downey Jr was more humorous in his speech. He joked,
“A sweeping story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1bn? Dozens of folks have come up to me since the summertime saying I was unrecognizably subtle as Lewis Strauss. To my fellow nominees, let’s not pretend this is a compliment.”

Since its release, Oppenheimer has been highly lauded. Named one of the top-ten films of 2023 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing biographical film, the highest-grossing World War II-related film, and the second-highest grossing R-rated film. The Golden Globe wins add another set of feathers to its already bulging cap.

Overall, it was a pleasant night for the movie industry. Succession continued its, well, success in the drama category with three acting wins; Barbie won the cinematic and box office achievement award, with Billie Eilish snagging the best original song for “What Was I Made For?” as one of the film’s soundtrack. Beef won in the best miniseries category, and The Bear won best musical or comedy series.
