Diversify Your Insta Feed
When you diversify your Insta feed with these positivity-spreading influencers, you might just learn something new about yourself and the world we live in.
Instagram can be an overwhelming place. With the constant competition for likes and interaction and the ongoing fear or feeling that you are missing out on something, it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. However, it can also be an incredibly informative and enlightening platform. There are a number of ‘influencers’ on Instagram who are using their platform for good. I’m not talking about the usual influencers we’re used to seeing, the ones who want you to follow the latest trends and buy the newest make-up set, I’m talking about the people who are trying to bring about change; real change, important change. By choosing to diversify your Insta feed, you might just learn something new about yourself and the world we live in.
Mikaela Loach
First on the list is climate justice activist Mikaela Loach (@mikaelaloach). Mikaela is just as active offline as she is online; placing campaigning and collaboration at the heart of everything she does. She is one of the hosts of the Yikes Podcast, a podcast for anyone who feels overwhelmed by the world we live in. Earlier this year, Mikaela, along with two other claimants, took the UK Government to court with the Paid to Pollute Campaign, forcing the Government to admit that the oil and gas industry has been paid more by the Government than they’ve paid in taxes. Mikaela is an advocate for all social groups and centres all of her work around collaboration and joy. She really practices what she preaches. And, her hope and ambition for a more joyous, fair, and equal world really is infectious.
Bee Illustrates
Bee (@beeillustrates) is a non-binary, queer illustrator and creative. A recent graduate, they have taken the plunge into full-time art-making fairly recently. Their art is expressive, fun, vibrant and inclusive. All of Bee’s illustrations are available to buy as prints and are guaranteed to brighten up your home. Not only are they an incredibly talented artist, but they also use their platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, trans-inclusivity, mental health and well-being and more inclusive and equal spaces. Following Bee’s account will definitely bring more joy into your life.
MAXINE
Maxine (@lookingformothermax) is a mental health advocate, antiracism advocate, writer and creative. Maxine’s Instagram is filled with information and advocation for BLM, better mental health and wellbeing services, and support for young people, but it is also filled with joy and laughter. At just 19 years old, Maxine has been juggling a big social following alongside A-levels and everything else that comes with being a teenager. I love this account because not only does it deal with the big issues, but it also centres on the joy and fun that should come with being young. Maxine doesn’t try to be anything they’re not, just themselves, trying to get by like all of us are.
Gina Martin
Gina Martin (@ginamartin) might already be familiar to you. She is known for bringing about the change in law, making upskirting illegal. She is a writer and advocate for gender equality for all. She is an anti-racism ally, an LGBTQ+ ally, and uses her platform to educate and inform. As an ambassador for UN Women UK and Beyond Equality, she is often seen at panel talks, writes articles, and uses her following to try and bring about real, concrete change. But she is also all about the fun and laughter, sharing adorable photos of her dog, weekly round-ups of TikToks that have brought her joy that she wants to share with others, and just generally being her authentic self. You’ll learn a lot from following Gina, but you’ll also laugh a lot too.
Ruby Rare
Ruby Rare (@rubyrare) is the author of Sex Ed: A Guide for Adults and ambassador of Brook; a sexual health and wellbeing support network for under 25s. She is the co-founder of the Body Love Sketch Club, and host of the podcast In Touch. As an advocate for sexual health, well-being and pleasure, Ruby brings informative insight into the importance of safety and well-being when it comes to pleasure and relationships. She brings the sex-ed lessons we never had in school. Their account, which focuses on sexual health, wellbeing, body positivity, and LGBTQ+ rights is fun, inclusive, colourful, informative, and always brings a smile to your face.
There are so many other amazing accounts that could have been included here. But, ultimately, the takeaway message here is that when you diversify your Insta feed, you will automatically make it a more joyful, powerful and informative space; just remember to take that advocacy and action offline and into the real world too.
