Best Products On the Market For Curly Hair

It’s a pretty well known fact that finding products for curly/kinky hair isn’t the easiest. From applying to researching and testing what works best.

Then there’s the myriad of products claiming to be the best for YOUR hair. Realistically, since there’s no ideal type of curly hair, there is no ideal product for it.

Instead we have to whip out charts to satisfy the hair type lords, the density and square root of our curl type and buy damn near every product under the sun just to get what’s best for our curly tresses. It’s a long journey but luckily I’ve written this article to GUIDE you to the best products for your natural hair, (emphasis on the word guide).

Whether your 3b curls need a detangling conditioner to fight frizz and dryness or your 4b coils need a leave-in to refresh that twist out. I narrowed down the best shampoos, pre-poos and hair masks and more. Lets grow your hair collection below (written in order of your wash day routine).

1. African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo

Everyone knows the struggle of wash day, your curls have turned into a messy mane which probably roars back every time you attempt to tame it with a comb, let alone shampoo it.

Luckily, African pride created a product which detangles and moisturises your hair before the shampoo products strip it away.

Like the name suggests, a Pre-Poo is done before Shampooing in order to make wash day easier. A complete win win in my eyes. Recommended for all hair types and density , especially thicker or type 4.

2. Africa’s Best Organic Hair Mayonnaise

A product I would honestly consider a staple in the kinky hair community, this hair treatment is best used after the take down of a protective or heat manipulated style in order to strengthen over processed hair.

It will really revive your strands. Can be used before or after a completed wash day. Recommended for high density or type 4 hair.

3. Garnier Ultimate Blends Hair Food Banana Hair Mask 390ml

Hangry hair? This banana mask by Garnier brings the best of haircare into one with 3 different ways to nourish your curls. This super affordable treatment can be used as a conditioner, rinse-out hair mask or leave-in conditioner.

This treatment for dry hair leaves your hair feeling hydrated and extra shiny. Featuring banana and shea with an amazing scent to top it off.

Recommended for medium density or type 3 hair.

4. Creme of Nature Argan Oil Moisture and Shine Sulphate Free Hair Shampoo 354 ml

The next and probably my favourite recommendation is this sulphate free Shampoo by Creme of Nature. This product manages to lather up beautifully and completely cleanse the scalp of any build up without stripping the hair of its natural moisture. It strengthens hair while optimising health.

With argan oil from Morocco and sulphate free hair formula, this is another win win for me. Recommended for any hair type and density.

5. Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey Shampoo

A new brand on the curly hair scene Mielle organics incorporate natural ingredients like honey into products to clarify and detangle thick curly hair.

I think a single product being able to clarify and detangle so well is a must on anyone’s shelf. A black owned brand who formulate and test every product they sell is another win. Recommended for low density or type 3 hair.

Next for our curly hair washday routine is conditioner recommendations.

6. Miracle Moist, Conditioner, Avocado & Australian Jojoba Oil, 12.1 fl oz

With moisturising Australian Macadamia nut oil, this brand probably isn’t the first pick for curly hair, but still performs fantastically. I would go as far and say this slip of this conditioner is legendary, leaving my hair soft and manageable, even after rinsing off.

Recommended for all hair types.

For a low maintenance curly hair routine, co washing is definitely your best friend. In short, it replaces shampoo in your weekly routine (not monthly, we still need to clarify that scalp) meaning you can wash your strands regularly without worrying about stripped hair.

7. AS I AM Naturally Coconut CoWash Shampoo 454g

This product is a gentle yet effective way to clean your curls, it spreads easily through hair and is a moisture top up. Definitely makes detangling a breeze so I can go about the rest of my week without a stressful wash day. Recommended for medium density all hair types.

Last but not least we have my favourite part of wash day, deep conditioning. This differs from treatments like Africa’s Best Hair Mayonnaise as it is made for a more consistent use, weekly is best recommended.

A brand hailed by all curl types, there was no way I could mention the best products without bringing up Shea Moisture. The diversity in their brand and dedication to formula is *chefs kiss*.

However their Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow and Restore Treatment Masque, is phenomenal. Featuring an array of natural products such as Shea Butter and Peppermint, this product is great for both curls and scalp, benefitting hair health at all angles. Shea Moisture this product was not named in vain at all, your tresses will definitely thank you for this. Recommended for all hair types, especially beneficial for type 4.
